Siemens And LanzaTech Team Up On Biofuels
LanzaTech and the metal division of Siemens have announced that they have entered into a ten-year marketing and development agreement. LanzaTech will work to produce biofuels from steel emissions. LanzaTech, based in Illinois, uses microbes to convert waste gases from any source of carbon monoxide into fuels and chemicals. B2PAC Changes Name to BRAG, Conducts Workshops on TSCA
The Biobased Products Advocacy Consortium (B2PAC) debuted today a new name, logo, and web address to describe more fully and descriptively the wide range of industrial biotechnology products made by its member companies. The consortium is now known as the Biobased and Renewable Products Advocacy Group, or BRAG. The new name and logo were previewed last week at the 2013 Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology in Montreal. Senate Continues Consideration Of Farm Bill Legislation
On Monday, June 10, 2013, the U.S. Senate passed its version of the next five-year Farm Bill reauthorization legislation, S. 954, the Agriculture Reform, Food and Jobs Act of 2013 (S. 954 or Farm Bill). The Senate retained the energy title as passed on May 14, 2013, by the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry. It includes $900 million in mandatory funding for rural energy programs that will support and encourage the continued development and commercialization of biofuels and renewable chemicals. Energy and Commerce Committee White Paper
On June 7, House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Fred Upton (R-MI) and Ranking Member Henry Waxman (D-CA) issued the fourth in a series of white papers on the federal RFS. This latest paper requests feedback from stakeholders on six questions on how the RFS impacts or affects energy security. Comments are due by June 21, 2013. The white paper is available online. On Wednesday, June 5, 2013, Chair James Lankford (R-OK) of the House Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee on Energy Policy, Healthcare and Entitlements held a hearing on "Up Against the Blend Wall: Examining EPA's Role in the Renewable Fuel Standard." USDA Announcement Of Funds For Advanced Biofuel Projects
On June 11, 2013, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) published a Federal Register notice regarding the availability of funds for eligible advanced biofuel projects. A total of $98.6 million is authorized to make payments to eligible advanced biofuels producers. Of the $98.6 million, $68.6 million will go to projects with Fiscal Year 2013 production, and the remaining $30 million is for payments for projects with production in prior fiscal years. USDA Amends Guidelines For Designating Biobased Products For Federal Procurement
In a June 11, 2013, final rule, the USDA amended the Guidelines for Designating Biobased Products for Federal Procurement, adding eight sections to designate product categories within which biobased products will be afforded federal procurement preference: aircraft and boat cleaners; automotive care products; engine crankcase oil; gasoline fuel additives; metal cleaners and corrosion removers; microbial cleaning products; paint removers; and water turbine bearing oils.
