USDA Awards Grants For Biobased Initiatives
On May 1, 2013, USDA announced that it was awarding 110 Value-Added Producer Grants (VAPG), including eleven for renewable chemicals and biobased products. The USDA press release states that these eleven awards "include grants to convert: corn stover to anhydrous ammonia; miscanthus fiber, wood and goat manure into biochar and enhanced compost; and sorghum to electricity and fertilizer." Tax Reform Efforts Continue
The Chairs of the House and Senate tax writing committees have both stated that comprehensive tax reform in this Congress is a top priority. To this end, both have been working to assess current incentives and have been seeking feedback from key stakeholders whose views are important to include as they consider wholesale reform of the U.S. Tax Code. Leaders Announce Plans To Consider Farm Bill
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) stated publicly that he would like the full Senate to consider a Farm Bill this month after the Senate Agriculture Committee marks up and passes its version of the legislation. Senate Agriculture Committee Chair Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) has reportedly stated that she plans to schedule a mark-up of her Committee's version of the next Farm Bill sometime this month. Rennovia Demonstrates 100% Biobased Nylon
Renewable chemical company, Rennovia, has announced that it has successfully demonstrated production of renewable hexamethylenediamine (HMD). This renewable HMD, combined with the company's renewable adipic acid, has allowed Renovia to make for the first time a 100% renewable nylon, Nylon-6,6. Toray Announces Demonstration Of Biobased PBT
Tokyo-based chemicals and plastics company, Toray Industries, has announced that it has successfully demonstrated a partially biobased polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) using Genomatica Inc.'s biobased 1,4-butanediol (BDO). The company reports that testing shows that the partial biobased PBT has properties equivalent to PBT made from petroleum-based BDO. Sweetwater And Naturally Scientific Enter Into 15-Year Renewable Chemical Project
Sweetwater Energy Inc., which specializes in producing low-cost sugars for biofuel and renewable chemical production, has entered into an agreement with Naturally Scientific to supply the company with customized industrial sugars over the course of 15 years in a transaction valued at $250 million.
