DOE Announces Intent To Award $100 Million For Energy Research
On Monday, September 30, 2013, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced that it intends to award $100 million for cutting edge energy research in areas including biofuels as part of its Energy Frontier Research Centers (EFRC). In 2009, DOE granted five-year awards ranging from $2 million to $5 million per year to each of 46 EFRCs throughout the country. The current Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is available online. Moniz Announces Selection Of Outside Advisors
Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz has announced the selection of 19 individuals to serve on the Secretary of Energy Advisory Board (SEAB). The press release on the announcement is available online. The SEAB will meet at least four times a year and will be broken into four subcommittees to focus on science, energy, nuclear security, and environmental stewardship. The group may also serve to provide advice to Secretary Moniz on an ad hoc basis to address specific issues. Secretary Moniz Addresses Biofuels
While in Brazil last week, U.S. Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz stressed the importance of biofuels as part of President Obama's Climate Action Plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To this end, Secretary Moniz called for greater partnership between the U.S. and Brazil on biofuels. Department of Energy Holds Sixth Annual Biomass 2013 Conference in Washington, D.C.
On July 31 and August 1, 2013, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) held its sixth annual "Biomass 2013: How the Advanced Bioindustry is Reshaping American Energy." Moniz Is Confirmed As Energy Secretary
On May 21, 2013, Dr. Ernest Moniz was sworn in as the 13th U.S. Secretary of Energy. The full Senate approved Dr. Moniz's nomination by a vote of 97-0 on May 16, 2013. Dr. Moniz started his career as a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1973, left in the 1990s to serve in the Clinton Administration as an Undersecretary at the Department of Energy, and then returned to MIT until taking on his current role as Energy Secretary. Department Announces Support For Military Biofuels Projects
This week, DOE announced that it would provide up to $18 million to support four pilot-scale projects designed to produce drop-in biofuels that would meet military specifications for jet fuel and shipboard diesel, and could be for military or commercial use. Funding recipients are required to provide at least 50 percent in matching funds. Developments On Moniz Nomination For DOE Secretary
While Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has placed a hold on the nomination of Ernest Moniz for the next Secretary of Energy, the full Senate could soon consider and approve the nomination. Last week, the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee approved the nomination by a vote of 21-1, with Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) dissenting because Moniz would not commit to continuing the Department of Energy's (DOE) plan to construct a facility to make mixed-oxide (MOX) fuel from surplus weapons-grade plutonium at the Savannah River site located near Aiken, South Carolina.
